aDhD Dieting, depression, YouTube channel etc Candid Blog

It's now 27th December 2023 - last time I posted was over a year ago.

I haven't been diagnosed, but I really believe I have ADHD because I have so many of the symptoms and I really struggled in school with time management, organisation of homework, socially etc. I underachieved and have always thought I could do much better than I have. People say I'm intelligent, but I really don't feel it half the time!

I have been toying with the idea of starting a YouTube channel, but one thing I hate is being a centre of attention and obviously when you're on video, you put yourself 'out there'. The other thing is time management  - I am not good at managing my time or if I have a day/week of feeling low and can't be bothered, I may not post on it and if I had subscribers I would owe it to them to post regularly! The videos would be 'take me as I am' because I don't wear make up, I don't have manicured nails (false or otherwise) - I can't wear false nails or nail polish anyway because of my work!

This is a bit of a candid blog post.

Hope whoever reads this had a really good Christmas and if you don't celebrate it - hope you had a relaxing time doing whatever you were doing. IF I do get my YouTube channel going I will share a link!

Lots of love

6 weeks until ๐ŸŽ„ Christmas ๐ŸŽ„ 2022

Well ๐ŸŽ„ Christmas๐ŸŽ„ is nearly upon us AGAIN and maybe you're thinking about your waistline - I know I am!

I've been away, this past week, celebrating my 30th Wedding Anniversary and I don't think I've eaten so much junk in ages! Lots of GF biscuits and some yummy wedding anniversary cake!

This coming Saturday (12th Nov 22) it's 6 weeks until Christmas Eve so it's time to get moving and losing. I was hoping, last time I lost 4 stone, I'd keep it off and maintain, but that wasn't to be - I've gained 1 stone and a bit (14lb+).

The weeks we have left (after this week):

November:

12th - this Saturday
19th
26th

December

3rd
10th
17th
24th

Let's try and be serious about losing weight for our health. After eating so much rubbish I feel like rubbish so the whole clichรฉ "You are what you eat" is true!

Take care reader - until next time

Activity and Accountability

On the online slimming club I belong to, one of the members was talking about "activity and accountability" and I thought it was a great idea, so I haven't long finished a 30 minute aerobic video by Rosemary Conley.

I would like to be 9 stone 3lb for my 30th Wedding Anniversary at the beginning of November, but I haven't been eating properly (that's code for I've been eating junk like crisps (potato chips etc).

If only I could get down to that weight and keep it off - that would be amazing!

OK onward and downward!

Hope whoever is reading this is having a great week so far

Off the starting blocks

Do you have blocks preventing you from losing weight? I have quite a few.

1. Apathy - I don't sleep well so I find it very easy to be apathetic. This really requires a lot of effort for me to get off this starting block! I need a massive push of willpower. ๐Ÿ

2. Procrastination - well if there was a degree in this I'd be a professor but probably not until tomorrow ๐Ÿ˜‰. I have said for years, "never say you're going to start tomorrow because tomorrow never comes. Always give the day you're going to start." Well that's good, but in my ๐Ÿ’“ I procrastinate. I definitely need a ๐Ÿš€ to get me off this starting block! ๐Ÿ

3. Fear (the "what if?" Syndrome - oh yes, this biggy)! What if I fail? What if... What if... What if... If I don't get off this block then I've failed already! ๐Ÿ

To win a race we have to get off the starting blocks. ๐Ÿƒ Can you imagine if a sprinter was on the blocks then said "you know what I can't be bothered!" Or "it's ok I'll do it tomorrow!" Or "what if I don't win?"

I really really do need to get off the starting blocks and get motivated to do something about my weight gain!

Reader if you're struggling to get off the starting blocks, take heart you're not alone, but we won't win this race if we stay on the blocks, we need to get off them, get rid of the excuses and...On your marks get

GO!! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿป‍♀️๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿฝ‍♀️๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿฟ

Hoarders and Dieting

I wrote this on the GetSlim site:

I've just spent an hour or so, throwing out 7 lever arch files of recipes from the Rosemary Conley magazines, dating between 1996 and 2013!

They had been sitting in a shelf not being looked at for years!
I was talking about losing weight, the other day and it being 90% psyche and 10% food, well I think hoarding and clinging onto stuff is a psychological thing!
Food is comfort and so is stuff (I think).
I have quite a few books, not read most of them, I just love seeing them sitting on bookshelves. I have the intention of reading them, but never do, so I think my next job is decluttering books! That brings me onto our minds (or my mind) are they cluttered with rubbish from the past? Past emotions, past memories. Do they need decluttering? Mine does, for sure!
It's difficult to let go at times! Letting go of those hurtful words, the hurtful deeds people have done to us, the loss of a loved one! All of the past bullying, the past hurts etc have built up so much they cloud our judgement!
I was bullied in school, not just by my peers but in a way, by my teachers. My dad and I never got on (we do now).
I have been thinking that sometimes we are broken (I'm talking about myself tbh) and we (I) need healing. Food is comfort and junk is comfort BUT if we could find healing, and we wouldn't need comfort!
Life is really difficult, but maybe if you're struggling (as I struggle so much), maybe take stock of why you need to be comforted - were you bullied, abused, made to feel inadequate (a form of bullying), lost someone very close to you etc? Perhaps write down those things which have affected you (you don't have to show them to anyone) because getting those out of your mind may be one step towards healing!
As I watched the American programme "Hoarders" on YouTube, I saw a pattern developing - the majority of those people started hoarding after a traumatic event in their lives! One poor woman's husband was shot dead in their house, another had lost her son, another was gay but was scared his family would reject him and there were others too. I began to think about the 90% psyche...
I hope this post isn't too personal, but I hope it helps!
Sending you all a massive hug

Things which MUST change

I wrote this on the Community Chat board of the GetSlim.co.uk site:

FOOD RELATED:

1. Drink more water/herbal tea (can't drink tea or coffee) ☕

2. Cut down on fatty/sugary foods ❌

3. Eat more foods high in vitamins and minerals ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿ“๐Ÿฅฆ๐Ÿฅ•

4. Avoid crisps in work (even if they are supposedly low fat/calorie) ❌

5. Plan for times when I know I might eat more or eat something I shouldn't, so that I can get back on track instead of wallowing in self-pity. ๐Ÿ™ˆ

6. Fill in my food diary so I can keep track of what I'm eating and drinking - even if it's bad!! ๐Ÿ“

EXERCISE RELATED:

7. Exercise daily:

Aerobic ๐Ÿคธ

Toning. ๐Ÿ‹️

Try Pilates? ๐Ÿง˜

Walk to work, even in the rain ☔

8. Log exercise in my diary on here too ๐Ÿ“

MENTAL HEALTH:

9. Only have a short amount of computer/phone/Switch time and STICK TO IT! ๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ“ฑ๐ŸŽฎ

10. Don't try and conquer this in one day - these things take time and energy! ๐Ÿง—

11. Don't use negative words, like "I've failed", "I'm hopeless" instead think "I'm human and I will have times when things might go to pot because I'm not perfect" but don't use this excuse to deliberately lose the plot! ๐Ÿ‘ฉ

12. Be disciplined to have a set bedtime (even when working, occasionally at 6am - plan for those times!) ๐Ÿ›Œ

13. Wintertime is bad for depression, realise that and plan accordingly!! ๐ŸŒ‘☔⛈️

14. The key word is PLAN!

"Plan your work, then work your plan"

Successful people didn't get where they are by sitting on their bums all day, dreaming up plans and never doing them! ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“‘๐Ÿ“ˆ๐Ÿ“‰

A Random Thought

I posted this on the Get Slim diet website (you need to be a member to see the post) [it has been edited slightly]

When you want to start losing weight AGAIN for the 500th time this month (or any given month), are you struck with fear? ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

Do you fear:

Failure?
Lack of self discipline?
Motivation to keep going?
General apathy?
Add anything else here...

Couch Moment  (I think I need a permanent Psychiatrist)!

I have been printing out oodles of recipes for soups and other dishes, which are on this site, but as I was looking at the pile of papers, I was struck with fear -
What is the point of printing these out if I am not going to follow the recipes - what a waste of paper?
What if I won't lose weight - my comfort zone is to be rather a free spirit where food is concerned! To step out of my comfort zone atm is daunting - I actually have to think about what I'm going to eat instead of winging it! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ
What if I make these dishes and waste the food?

This losing weight thing is frustrating because I was relatively good at keeping my weight off in my 20s and 30s (I did gain a stone every so often, but I'd soon lose it). Now I'm in my early 50s and although I'm not as big as I was in my mid-late 40s, I'm a stone and a half heavier than I was in 2019 after I lost 3.5 stone.

How do you face your dieting fears? Head on or do you crumple in a heap in despair? Sometimes I 'get in the zone' and get on with it, other times, I crumple in a heap!

Whoever is reading this - don't get despondent, be encouraged - you're not alone!

Take care and enjoy your week

Talking Depression and Dieting - the Elephant in the room

In 2019 I lost over 2 stone (28lb) in weight, now in 2021 I've gained quite a bit back!๐Ÿคจ

Let's go back a bit.

In 2016 I was 12 stone 13lb (82.10Kg/181lb) when my son left home to go to University. In the first year he wasn't home I lost 1 stone (6.35Kg/14lb) to get down to 11 stone 13lb (75.75Kg/ 167lb).

In 2019 I got to the point where I didn't want to be frump woman anymore so I went on a calorie controlled diet and got down to 9 stone 3lb (58.51Kg/129lb) - I thought, THIS IS IT, I'm not going to go over 9st 7lb. In 2020 I had a 50th birthday bash and ate for Britain - slowly my weight climbed, lockdown happened and despite working I started feeling low. I weighed today (9th May 2021) and I'm back up to 11st 0lb (69.85Kg/154lb) ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. I have been having migraines, which doesn't help!

Depression is something which people who haven't suffered with it, haven't got a clue what it's all about ๐Ÿคท‍♀️ and think it's easy just to "snap out of it" and those of us who have suffered with it, don't like talking about ๐Ÿค BUT I believe (and have done for a fair few years now) that losing weight is about 90% (if not, more) psyche ๐Ÿคฏand 10% (if not, less) about the food itself.๐ŸŒฎ๐ŸŒญ๐Ÿฅ๐ŸŠ๐ŸŒ

A lot of people probably start off dieting with enthusiasm and then get bored after a while, throwing in the towel and giving up. Others are focused and can lose weight with ease and keep it off.

When you're depressed, everything is exaggerated and it's not just feelings of hunger they need to worry about, it's feelings of inadequacy, failure, self image, hate towards self, feelings of ugliness. It doesn't matter how much you tell a depressed person they are beautiful, precious, worthy etc, it is hard for them to see it!

What is the answer? If you suffer from depression (for a start if you haven't seen a GP about it - go have a chat). Here are a few things which have helped in the past:

1. Recognise your limitations - remember that if you do suffer from depression, you may have days where you want to pig out on a few biscuits (it's crisps for me). When you're not feeling down - that's the time to have a back up plan for those depressed days.

2. If you're going out for a meal (Lockdowns dependant) and you know you're going to eat more than  usual - plan for getting back on track. Embrace the fact you're going to be eating more that day/evening, but make sure the following day is planned out so that you can jump back in.

3. If you have had an unplanned binge (see point one), don't have a pity party (I know that suffering from depression can make this difficult), get straight up and brush yourself off (metaphorically speaking) and carry on.

4. Dump words like - I've failed, I'm useless, I'll never do it etc - using negative words/phrases will set you up for a negative reaction to the whole thing, it will drag you down more and then you will be more likely to binge and throw in the towel. You've NOT failed, You're NOT useless, You WILL do it - NONE of us are perfect, we have slip ups make mistakes etc, and we know we're not perfect, so why do we act as if we are when it comes to losing weight?

5. Don't think you can lose 5 stone (or however much) overnight - set realistic goals. Take each day as it comes and don't look beyond those days (unless you have a meal out planned, then just plan for that).

6. This has just come to mind and I haven't done this, but may do it - have a notebook with back up menus in it, for those times when you do binge or have a big meal out with friends - it's something you could write while your enthusiasm is there (usually at the beginning of your weight loss journey), then if you are feeling down about eating too much, reach for your notebook and there are some meal ideas laid out for you already and you won't have to think about it too much (I have found when I'm depressed, thinking is much more difficult)!

7. Throw away your excuses - I (you) ate too much, NOBODY forced me (you) to eat that packet of crisps/biscuits/bar of chocolate etc

Linked with number 7:

8. Take responsibility for your previous eating choices. Don't blame anybody else!

9. If a lot of your self image issues are due to bullying when you were a child (mine definitely are), then remember that it was in the past, kids can be mean. I was told by a girl in school that if she had a face like mine, she'd teach her a**e to talk - I came across a school photo  which she was in, and she wasn't particularly pretty (neither am I, but still). Just remember, people say mean things to make themselves feel better and more than likely those who bully feel bad about themselves (or have an over inflated ego which nobody likes anyway).

These points are as much for me (if not more so) as they are for you, dear reader, hope this post helps!

Just remember - you are precious and so worthwhile.

UPDATE December 2020

Last year I managed to lose weight to fit into size 12 (UK) clothes and I felt great! THEN came Christmas and after that my 50th birthday, THEN Covid - I am now wearing size 14 (UK) and have gained over a stone (14lbs - not sure what the kilos are)!

Maybe it's time to start my YouTube channel up again and Vlog my weight loss progress, plus maybe share some tips, places visited (Covid lockdowns depending), food eaten etc etc!

Hope my readers are well and staying safe and healthy!

Psychology and Dieting - a book I'm reading called... [read on to find out]

I've often thought (and said) that dieting is about  90% psyche and 10% food - I have just started reading a book by Dr Helen McCarthy, a Clinical Psychologist, called:

How to Retrain Your Appetite: Losing Weight Permanently Eating All Your Favourite Foods.

ISBN: 978-1-911624-47-9

I received it today (Sunday 30th August 2020) and have read the first 3 chapters, so far - it's very easy to read and so far has some really good points to make. I feel this could be the book for me, to help me crack my bad eating habits and to gain control of my yo-yo dieting tendencies.

I'm not on commission from the author (haha - I don't even know her), but hopefully will keep you updated about my progress and I will give you a fuller review once I've finished reading the book!

Have a wonderful Bank Holiday Weekend

The diet and you are a TEAM!

I posted the following on Rosemary Conley's online slimming club Community Chat board:
What do I mean by this? Well, let me use my work as an example! I'm part of a team of 4 bakers, each of us have specific times we work, but we are a team. I'm the afternoon baker - the others are either morning or they will do the odd afternoon if I'm on a day off or on holiday etc. Now if the morning bakers don't finish what they are supposed to finish, I do their job as well as my own - now I would say this isn't good team work (although on busy days it can't be helped). They are not working efficiently. Now this is the similar to dieting!
Rosemary's diets DO work - they really do BUT you have to be part of the team. The diet will only work for you, if you work with the diet plan. If you slack here and there, don't fill in your food diary (as I haven't been doing lately and not lost any weight), don't follow the recipes closely, nibble here, nibble there, the diet isn't going to work because you're not being part of the team!
There are some teams you really don't want to be part of - it may be very very difficult, but they won't do you any good! I can't be part of Team Crisps - why? Because once I start I can't get enough of them - they are an addiction! Last Monday I visited my parents and my dear dad buys multipacks of crisps and gives them out (as multipacks, not just one bag from them)! On Monday he was trying to give me some ready salted multipack of Smiths crisps, plus some other multipack of flavoured crisps. The flavoured crisps had ingredients I can't eat (wheat and dairy), so I said we would have the flavoured crisps (to keep him happy because he just enjoys giving people things - he's a darling)! I don't want to be part of Team Crisps because I know once I start I could eat all 7 packs in the multipack and my poor hubby and son wouldn't get a look in!
So come on folks - the diet WILL work if you work WITH the diet! Come on be part of TEAM DIET (or LIFESTYLE CHANGE/WEIGHT LOSS PLAN - whatever you want to call it).
To date I have lost 3st 8lb (50lb/ 22.67Kg) by working WITH the diet plan. I'm now in the green section of the BMI charts. It has taken me a fair few years to get into TEAM DIET mode, but once I 'joined' and worked WITH the plan, I lost the weight!
No excuses now - come on board and let's work together with the plan we're on!

Another money incentive

Why not use an accumulative total when losing weight! Let me show you below:

(I'm using GBP £ as I'm a Brit)

5lb lost = £5
10lb loss = £10 (plus the £5 = £15)
15lb lost = £15 (plus the £15 = £30)
20lb loss = £20 (plus the £30 = £50)
25lb loss = £25 (plus the £50 = £75)
30lb loss = £30 (plus the £75 = £105)
35lb loss = £35 (plus the £105 = £140)

Edited on 22nd Sept 2019 - I've lost 49lb so far!

You may not be able to afford that amount, but you work the totals (rules) as your budget will allow!

9lb (NINE POUNDS) to go

I have 9 pounds to go before I reach 9 stone! I would love to be just under that - OK between 8st 7 and 8st 13lb!

Have a week off work this week so I  have my menus planned out and I also need to drink more water and do more exercise and hope I can shed a few pounds this week - I stayed the same last week!

BOO HOO - this is now 9th May 2021 and I'm now 11st 0lb! Yep, I've gained weight! Looking at my YouTube Dieting channel and seeing if I can resurrect is and post regularly on it!

Onward and downward!

Weekly Blog, journalling and losing weight.

I was wondering, today, whether to do a weekly blog (memory depending ๐Ÿ˜‰). I don't know if many people read this, but hey, it's good to document your life, sometimes!

I journal and try to write daily - doesn't always happen, but I do try and keep it updated as much as possible. I started writing a journal last year (2017) and really enjoyed writing one so this year I've continued and I have next year's ready!

It's so important to remember the good and bad times, how one coped during difficult times.

Losing Weight:

Managed to get down to 10 stone 10 a few months back, but weighed myself last Sunday and I'm 11 stone 10lb! ARGH! Why is gaining easier than losing? Well not beating myself up - it's not worth it, best thing is to pick myself up and carry on again!

Last Sunday I went for a longish walk and I enjoyed it! The day was sunny and quite warm for this time of year. Felt pleased!

I've started singing lessons with a new teacher because it was a bit far to go for my other teacher. The new one will be good, I think! He is explaining pronunciation of words, was telling me of research which has been conducted when voices are strained by trying to reach low notes etc. Now to practice more - at least half an hour a day! Maybe I will get to do Grades 6, 7 and 8! OK baby steps...

Well until next time
